Irina Dumitrascu

Known and appreciated especially for her series of abstract Polaroids, Irina Dumitrașcu-Măgurean is one of the few artists in Romania who practices instant photography and experimental techniques made without the classic camera. The artist's constant interest in Polaroid, photograms or photographic collages, reveals a consistent visual approach based on the need to capture the process of representation or documentation in a unique and personal way.

Irina Dumitrașcu-Măgurean's works are more than simple images; they express actions, exposing gestures, feelings and intentions. As the artist herself confesses: “I abstract the images, both by technical means and by concept, so that the starting point of photography can no longer be recognized, and thus the image is cut out of context and unable to be identified. I clean my images of excess information, of the figurative and details, until I reach a semi-pictorial area”.

Irina Dumitrașcu-Măgurean (b. 1985) is a Cluj-Napoca based visual artist. She studied at the University of Art and Design Cluj-Napoca, where she obtained a PhD in Visual Arts (2013). She is currently a lecturer in the Department of Photography at the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca and coordinates the activity of the artist-run exhibition space Camera, within Centrul de Interes, Cluj-Napoca. Her recent solo exhibitions are Blur curated by Maria Rus Bojan at Brukenthal National Museum (Sibiu, 2020) and Image Library at New Now art space (Frankfurt, 2018). Group exhibitions include Gute Bekannte, Patrick Heide Contemporary (London, 2018), Jeune Creation Europeenne, The Belfry (Montrouge, 2017) and Almost Object, Vajda Museum (Szentendre, 2016).
